Having a bit of a wobble in the belly is a reality for most, but one needs to be real about the dangers of belly fat as it’s affecting more people than ever before. According to the latest government stats, 26 percent of British adults are classified as obese. Not all fats are the same and having excess layers around the waist negatively affects one’s health.
Having abdominal fat, also known as visceral fat, produces more of the inflammatory chemicals that interfere with the body’s normal function than fat stored elsewhere on the body, like the buttocks or thighs.
Public health expert Professor Tim Gill from the University of Sydney said: “When you have a lot of visceral fat, it releases a lot of these inflammatory chemicals which have profound effects on other parts of the body.”
In men, a waist circumference of 94 centimetres or more means they have an increased risk of chronic disease, according to the Department of Health.
Measuring 102 centimetres or more means an even greater risk. For women, the corresponding figures are slightly lower including 80 centimetres and 88 centimetres.
Those worried about having too much visceral fat need to be vigilant with the foods they eat.
According to leading health experts, increasing your metabolism has been proven to help you lose your visceral fat.
Increase your metabolism
The ultimate goal when trying to lose belly fat is to hike up the metabolism and the intensity of the workout.
This is the fundamentals of the diet, how much muscle you may have, how well you manage stress and the quality of your sleep which all play a significant role in losing visceral fat.
Marcus Reddy, consultant laparoscopic, upper GI and bariatric surgeon at Spire St Anthony’s Hospital said: “A faster metabolism helps burn fat and while your metabolism is predetermined by your body size, sex and age, increasing lean boy mass, avoiding long periods of hunger and intense periods of physical activity can aid burning more metabolism.”

Mayo Clinic added: “Metabolism is the process by which the body converts what a person eats and drinks into energy.
During this complex biochemical process, calories in food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy the body needs to function. Even when you’re at rest, your body needs energy for all its hidden functions.
The number of calories your body uses to carry out these basic functions is known as your basal metabolic rate.”
The best ways found to increase metabolism and help eliminate belly fat include eating more protein, drink more cold water, do more HIIT workouts, lift heavy things, stand up more and drink green tea.
Increasing your metabolism and having a ‘fast metabolism’ will help a person to burn more fat, lose their visceral fat and greatly reduce their risk of serious health complications.
