Turmeric derives its medicinal superpowers from the compound curcumin, which has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial for digestion, detoxification, and pain relief.
Studies have pinpointed that curcumin may be able to also help fight depression.
Curcumin may have the potential to reduce a person’s risk for heart disease, prevent cancer, treat Alzheimer’s disease, and aid in relieving arthritis symptoms.
Brain health
In a study published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, the benefits of drinking turmeric lattes for improved brain health were analysed.
For a total of 18 months, the study’s participants were randomised to one of two groups.
One group took 90 milligrams of curcumin twice daily, while the other group took a placebo.
All volunteers underwent standard cognitive tests, and these were repeated every six months throughout the study, as well as at the end of the study.
The results found that subjects who took curcumin twice daily demonstrated a 28 per cent improvement in memory tests over the course of the experiment, while those who took the placebo showed no significant memory improvements.
Diabetes risk
Studies have found that turmeric can help to delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes, lowering blood glucose levels and reversing insulin resistance.
Given their blood sugar-regulating abilities, when ginger and turmeric are combined, they’re a powerful tool to manage diabetic symptoms.
Studies have found the drink may help to prevent the dangerous peaks and troughs often associated with type 2 diabetes further reducing symptoms and possibly reversing the condition.
