Baking soda, better known in the UK as bicarbonate of soda, isn’t just for baking cakes and unblocking sinks. This white crystalline salt is made of sodium cation and a bicarbonate anion and it is really useful for removing stains on fabric as well as your teeth. Here’s how to use baking soda to remove brown marks from your teeth, according to Arm and Hammer.

No matter how much you brush your teeth, sometimes stains will appear and dull that gleaming smile.

If you enjoy a cup of coffee or tea or like indulging in a glass of red wine, your teeth probably have a few stains on them.

You don’t need to visit an expensive dental professional or waste your money on questionable teeth whitening lamps, strips and pens, there’s a much cheaper solution.

Baking soda is an extremely affordable whitening ingredient and you probably already have some in your kitchen cupboard right now.

Your health is your wealth and you don’t want to be applying anything that could potentially damage your teeth.

According to the experts at Arm and Hammer, baking soda is good for teeth whitening because it is a very mild abrasive, which helps remove stains from the surface of your teeth.

Most of the foods we eat that stain our teeth are acid-based, and the salty alkaline powder will help to lighten the stains they leave.

Whitening up brown stains on your teeth with baking soda couldn’t be easier, and you only need a tiny bit of baking soda.

Arm and Hammer recommend mixing a tablespoon of baking soda with a tablespoon of water in a small bowl (roughly equal parts baking soda and water).

You’ll make a thick paste that you can apply to your teeth with your fingers or a soft-bristled toothbrush.

It’s important to note that if you choose to use a brush, it has to be soft-bristled to avoid damaging your teeth as baking soda is abrasive.

A quick scrub won’t do, you’ll need to brush for about two minutes using circular motions and be sure to coat all of your teeth with the paste.

Make sure you gently brush all around your mouth, hitting each tooth, for the best results.

Arm and Hammer stress the importance of scrubbing gently, as this hack can do more harm than good if you don’t.

The site warns: “Do not scrub too hard or use too much force.”

After two minutes, spit out the baking soda and rinse your mouth thoroughly with water or mouthwash.

You should also rinse your toothbrush to get rid of any traces of baking soda.

If your stains are too deep, you’ll need to use a more intense method.

The Arm and Hammer site says: “Substitute over-the-counter topical hydrogen peroxide for the water in your DIY baking soda teeth whitening recipe.

“The solution will bubble and fizz some as the two ingredients combine.

“If you’re using the baking soda and hydrogen peroxide method, keep the paste on your teeth for one minute before rinsing.

“Be careful not to swallow the paste and check with your dental care professional to make sure this DIY treatment is suitable for you.”

To prolong the effects of this at-home treatment, use a toothpaste that contains baking soda such as one by Arm and Hammer.

Baking soda is great for whitening your teeth but it won’t prevent cavities, gum disease, and other dental problems, so you’ll need to use high-quality toothpaste to keep your mouth healthy.

You don’t need to use a baking soda toothpaste most days, you can use your favourite toothbrush daily and then add in a baking soda toothpaste every other day, as well as the treatment above every now and then.
