The award-winning actor “was falling asleep… just feeling terrible and dying of thirst”, before his wife took him to the hospital. “My wife took me into emergency at Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco and I was straight on a slab… and I have diabetes,” Moore said soon after his diagnosis in 2013. Speaking on ITV’s This Morning at the time, Moore said he was “losing a kilo a day”, and he had to have all of his trousers taken in.
When diabetes goes untreated, unexplained weight loss is one indication of high blood sugar.
The NHS states: “Many people have type 2 diabetes without realising. This is because symptoms do not necessarily make you feel unwell.”
The classic warning signs of type 2 diabetes include urinating more frequently, especially at night, and feeling thirsty all of the time.
High blood sugar can also lead to tiredness, repeated thrush infections, and wounds taking longer to heal.
Moreover, methotrexate getting off the condition can lead to blurred vision. As soon as you notice any such symptoms, do book an appointment with your doctor.
When high blood sugar keeps rising, health complications can occur, such as nerve damage.
In many ways, if diabetes is not managed effectively, the long-term health complications can limit a person’s life.
For instance, type 2 diabetes can lead to heart disease and stroke, the NHS warns, which are two possible life-limiting conditions.
Once Moore learned of his health condition, he made adjustments to his lifestyle habits.
“I make a very good dry martini but I’m not allowed to drink them any more,” he told the Sunday Telegraph when he was alive. “No more sugar, no alcohol.”
Yet, it wasn’t diabetes that Moore died from; it was a short battle with cancer.
Moore was 89 years old when he died from lung and liver cancer in Switzerland, May 2017.
His wife, Kristina, and his children – Deborah, Christian, and Geoffrey – survived him.
And so did his work; in addition to the Bond films, Moore starred in A Christmas Princess (2011), Spice World (1997), and A View To Kill (1985).
Lung cancer
Moore may not have experienced any warning signs of lung cancer in the early stages of the disease.
However, as a lung tumour grows in size, certain symptoms might appear, the NHS says, which includes:
- A cough that doesn’t go away after 2 or 3 weeks
- A long-standing cough that gets worse
- Chest infections that keep coming back
- Coughing up blood
- An ache or pain when breathing or coughing
- Persistent breathlessness
- Persistent tiredness or lack of energy
- Loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss.
Less common symptoms of lung cancer might include:
- Changes in the appearance of your fingers, such as becoming more curved or their ends becoming larger (this is known as finger clubbing)
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or pain when swallowing
- Wheezing
- A hoarse voice
- Swelling of your face or neck
- Persistent chest or shoulder pain.
Liver cancer
There may not be any symptoms of liver cancer, which can make it extremely difficult to diagnose.
However, if symptoms do present themselves, it can include jaundice and a lump in the right side of the stomach.
Roger Moore stars in A View To Kill, which is airing on Monday, October 10 at 6.20pm on ITV4.
