Aside from portraying different characters, Jackson displayed his versatility when it comes to his diet.
After learning that he had a life-threatening blood clot neat his heart, his doctor encouraged Jackson to alter his diet.
“I’m lucky,” Jackson said, revealing he turned to a “hardcore vegan regime”.
“My doctor said it was my greatest chance of staying alive – and it worked,” he explained.
“I lost weight, lowered my blood pressure, lowered my cholesterol levels and my body mass index.”
Health benefits of a vegan diet
Cardiologist Doctor Jeffrey Soble, based at Rush University Medical Center, noted that a vegan diet can help to:
- Promote weight loss
- Reduce heart disease risk
- Lower cancer risk
- Manage blood sugar.
Doctor Soble warned, however, that becoming a vegan doesn’t automatically mean you have a healthy diet.
“Refined grains, sweets and junk food are troublemakers for everyone,” he cautioned.
“To have a healthy diet of any kind, you need important nutrients,” Doctor Soble added.
Protein, for example, can be found in tofu and edamame, in addition to chickpeas, lentils, and nutritional yeast.
Vitamin B12 can be found in fortified cereals, rice, and soy drinks – or in supplements.
As for “essential fatty acids”, which is associated with fish, vegan options include: whole grains, kale, spinach, collards, almonds, walnuts, and pistachios.
