Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for England Dr Keith Ridge found that more than one in seven people are taking at least five medicines a day ‑ and that 10 percent of dispensed medicines are inappropriate or have a more beneficial alternative.
Noting that the issue is linked to the UK’s net-zero aim, he said: “Production and use of medicines is a major driver of greenhouse gas emissions.”
Dr Ridge recommends social prescribing, in which patients are directed to community services, and better handovers by hospitals to communities.
