Fact: People kinda-definitely low-key (totally) freak out when they hear that Mercury is going retrograde. And, even if you don’t check your horoscope on the reg, it’s easy to get swept up in the concern, too.
FWIW, Mercury goes retrograde three times a year, and the world doesn’t implode or anything. But the astrological experience can bring a little ~change~ and, yeah, sometimes it can even cause some (very minor) chaos.
Well—brace yourself—Mercury is going retrograde on June 18 in the sign of Cancer, buttttt it’s actually not going to be bad at all. Instead, this Mercury retrograde will make you rethink some things in your life, according to Donna Page, a certified astrologer. There’s a lot more to it than that, though.
Here’s what your zodiac sign can expect from the latest Mercury in retrograde.
Wait—what is Mercury in retrograde, anyway?
In astrology, the word “retrograde” means that something seems to be moving backwards in the sky. (Not IRL, but that would be cool.) When Mercury goes retrograde, it looks like it’s moving from east to west vs. its usual west to east.
Mercury isn’t the only planet that goes retrograde—every planet does it at some point (and Venus is actually retrograde right now). Each time a planet goes retrograde, it happens in a different astrological sign, and that has some meaning attached to it. Because this particular Mercury retrograde is happening in the sign of Cancer, that can mean a few different things.
How will June’s Mercury in retrograde impact your zodiac sign?
Mercury in retrograde is always about thinking things over but, when it’s in the sign of Cancer, it’s about rethinking things around your home and family. In general, Page says you’re going to have some serious #thoughts about how you can create some sense of normalcy and security in your everyday life.
You’ll try to figure out some creative ways to safely visit with your family again while still taking proper precautions to decrease the spread of COVID-19, like planning socially distant picnics or teaching your Nanna to FaceTime, so you can see each other ASAP.
At the same time, you’ll find yourself thinking about how you feel about your current living situation. Is it time to move? Or, are you not 100-percent sold on that place you were thinking of moving to? Should you get renter’s insurance just in case something bad you haven’t already thought about happens? And where are those fears coming from, anyway? It’s a good idea to figure it all out before you make any drastic changes.
Also, you’ll find yourself teetering on that family wedding you’ve been invited to. Is it ~actually~ safe to go, or with the ongoing pandemic, is being there to watch your cousin get hitched a risk you’re willing to take?
Emotional safety is also going to come up for you. Do you feel like you’re dating someone who makes you feel like you can be your most authentic self? Or do you still feel like you’re holding back on some level?
Mercury in retrograde will impact all astrological signs, but Page says that Cancer and Capricorn will feel it the most.
How will Mercury in retrograde impact your sign in the future?
The vibe from Mercury in retrograde doesn’t last forever, but it can spark some change that’ll impact you going forward. Maybe you’ll realise that, yeah, it’s actually a great time to move to a new place, and you’ll end up feeling cozier and happier whenever you’re home (a.k.a. a lot). And maybe you’ll discover that your emotional security with your S.O. isn’t as high as you’d like it to be, sparking the need for some honest convos about what has to change to get you both there.
Whatever the deal, don’t freak out that Mercury is going retrograde. It happens, and the world keeps on turning. You’ll be okay. Just don’t forget to back up your phone, JIC.
