Dentist reveals how much toothpaste you should use
While brushing your teeth doesn’t exactly seem like rocket science, there are probably small details you pay attention to during the process.
From putting the right amount of toothpaste on the bristles to ensuring you are using the correct technique, you might think that dental health cornerstones are built when you are standing in front of the bathroom sink.
However, a dentist has warned that the time, meals and drinks leading up to this daily ritual of oral hygiene also plays a crucial role.
Dr Payal Bhalla, Lead Dentist and Clinical Director of Quest Dental, said: “There are several things you should avoid doing before brushing your teeth to maintain good oral hygiene and protect your dental health.”
The expert shared she would “never” do these four following things.

1.Consuming acidic foods or drinks
From citrus fruits to juices and soda to vinegar-based foods, acidic substances can soften your tooth enamel, making it more susceptible to damage from brushing, the dentist warned.
Dr Bhalla said: “While it’s essential to brush your teeth regularly, it’s best to wait at least 30 minutes after consuming acidic foods or drinks before brushing.
“This gives your saliva a chance to neutralise acids and your enamel to reharden, reducing the risk of enamel erosion.”
2.Eating sugary or sticky foods
Sugary and sticky snacks are another thing you should avoid before your tooth brushing session, as they can promote the growth of harmful bacteria in your mouth, leading to tooth decay.

Therefore, the dentist recommended staying away from candies, chocolates, and other sugary snacks before the oral hygiene practice.
3.Drinking coffee or tea
The beloved hot beverages can be quite acidic for your enamel, putting you at a similar risk of problems just like citrus fruits and sodas.
Dr Bhalla said: “If you do consume these beverages, try to do so after brushing.”
The dentist also recommended rinsing your mouth with water after your daily cuppa so your teeth won’t stain.
4.Smoking or using tobacco products
These two habits can also stain your teeth as well as increase your risk of gum disease and oral cancer.
While you should consider quitting tobacco products altogether, “at least avoid” them before brushing if you can’t quit, the dentist advised.
While it’s important not to brush your teeth straight after these foods, drinks and products, the expert added that brushing twice a day is still essential.
“[Use] a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristle toothbrush, to maintain good oral hygiene,” she added.
