Known as alopecia, there are several different types of hair loss Dr Giuseppe points out.

Alopecia areata

Alopecia areata is when “coin-sized” patches of baldness appear, which isn’t restricted to the scalp.

This type of hair loss “is often the result of an autoimmune problem”, said Dr Giuseppe.

An autoimmune response triggers inflammation, leading to hair falling out.

Alopecia totalis

“Alopecia totalis causes total baldness,” the doctor revealed. ” Like alopecia areata, this condition is the result of an autoimmune disorder.”

Traction alopecia

Dr Giuseppe revealed this type of hairless usually appears in women due to harsh hair styling: excessive pulling, heating, braiding and bleaching.

All of these things can strain the scalp and hair follicles, which will lead to inflammation and hair loss.

Alopecia effluvium

Alopecia effluvium is temporary hair loss, “resulting from high stress and psychological issues”.

You can tell if it’s alopecia effluvium because it won’t follow the predictable pattern of female or male-pattern baldness.

Know you understand the five types of hair loss, what can you do to stop the hair from falling out?

“If you are experiencing hair loss, you know how embarrassing and frustrating thinning hair can be,” said Dr Giuseppe sympathises.

“The benefits of treating hair loss go far beyond simply restoring your hair growth – hair loss treatment can improve your self-identity, confidence with others, and your outlook on life.”

For men, one of the best ways to treat hair loss is to take advantage of medication.

“Propecia is the first and only medication proven to treat male pattern hair loss on the top and middle front of your head,” stated Dr Giuseppe.

He explained: “Propecia contains finasteride, which inhibits the activity of DHT [dihydrotestosterone].”

The once-daily prescription medication is available to order on Prescription Doctor.

“Research results suggest that prescription medication can increase hair count,” reassured Dr Giupesse.

“It’s regarded as one of the most effective treatments for hair loss,” he added.

Other ways to boost hair growth, endorsed by Dr Giupesse, is to use hair growth products that contain Minoxidil.

Additionally, people can use “natural remedies”, such as saw palmetto – available in supplement form.

For those really at their wits’ end, expensive hair transplants are also another option.
