Graphic Black Eyeliner Is the Biggest Beauty Trend at the Billboard Music Awards

There's nothing I love more than a graphic eye look — it's what I (and I'm sure tons of other folks) have been leaning on throughout the past year of consistent mask-wearing. And even though masks are slowly starting to come off as the masses get vaccinated, I'll still always be on the hunt for bold new looks to copy. Thankfully, the 2021 Billboard Music Awards has been stacked with those.

Doja Cat, most notably, showed up bright and early to the red carpet with a black and blue look that incorporated cat-eye shapes and tons of negative space. (The look was done by makeup artist Ernesto Casillas with Suva Beauty eyeliners, by the way.) And that's only one of the graphic looks she brought to the table; just before her performance with SZA, she quick-changed into a second eye look with sharp wings on both the outer and inner corners.

Dixie D'Amelio, one of the ceremony's presenters, delivered her own take on the graphic black cat-eye, as well. Hers has layered lines around the outer corners of her eyes, which are dotted with small crystals.

If you've got a steady hand with liquid eyeliner, then this look should be a breeze to recreate at home with a little practice — otherwise, you can use eyeliner stickers to make a big statement in seconds, flat. May we recommend Face Lace's selection?

Rapper Saweetie, meanwhile, delivered a more classic take on the black cat-eye — it might not be as graphic, but those wings are so big, sharp, and clean that they're more than deserving of an honorable mention. A high-quality black liquid eyeliner pen like Maybelline New York Hyper Easy Liquid Eyeliner is all you need for this look.

If you've ever wondered whether black eyeliner will go out of style, the answer is no. Never. Not even a chance. The Billboard Music Awards' looks are only a small slice of evidence. So don't underestimate all those seemingly plain felt tips and gel crayons in your kits, folks.
