Now is the time of year where cases of flu start to become more common. But some people are reporting symptoms that align with both flu and Covid – a combined infection that has been coined ‘flurona’. Indeed, with flu season coinciding with the recent surge in Covid cases it’s feared more cases of flurona could be imminent. Here’s a full list of all the symptoms which could indicate the virus’ presence.

Flurona is the term used to describe when a person has been infected with influenza – or more commonly known as flu – and Covid simultaneously.

Health experts have stressed that it is not a new disease, nor is it a new variant of Covid.

Flu and Covid are from two different virus families. Flu is from the Orthomyxoviridae family, while Covid originates from the family, Coronaviridae.

A comprehensive list of symptoms for flurona is difficult to confirm as both viruses affect the body at the same time.

Where have flurona cases been reported?

Last week, Israel reported a pregnant woman had contracted both viruses at the same time.

Doctors confirmed the finding at Beilinson Hospital in the city of Petach Tikva.

Professor Arnon Vizhnitser, director of the hospitals’ Gynaecology Department, told the Jewish newspaper Hamodia of one of the women: “She was diagnosed with the flu and coronavirus as soon as she arrived.

“Both tests came back positive, even after we checked again.

“The disease is the same disease. They’re viral and cause difficulty breathing since both attack the upper respiratory tract.”

In early 2020 the US is thought to have reported the first case of flurona after a man in New York was diagnosed with the rare double infection.

Presently no official cases of flurona have been recorded within the UK.
