The breakfast food that could reduce belly fat and promote weight loss

Dr Zoe Williams discusses visceral fat on This Morning

Whether you enjoy yours scrambled on a toast or boiled in a salad bowl, eggs offer more than a kick of protein.

Packed with all the essential trace elements like copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc, the small foods also have some health tricks up their sleeves.

What’s more, eggs could also help reduce belly fat and promote weight loss.

Nutritionist Isabela Ramos Podboi, from MyHealthChecked, told Express.co.uk: “Eggs can help control hunger and regulate food intake.

“They are high in protein, which fills you up, and helps regulate blood sugar levels, making them beneficial for weight management.

“Egg consumption may also reduce ghrelin levels (a hormone that increases appetite), which promotes weight control further.”

Don’t just take the expert’s word for it, as previous findings have shared that egg white protein was able to cut visceral fat in animal models.

Hidden deep inside your belly, visceral fat, also known as belly fat, surrounds some of your vital organs, such as the liver, pancreas and intestines.

Due to this tricky location, the build-up of this harmful fat can lead to serious health problems, including heart disease and diabetes.

Fortunately, research, published in the journal Lipids in Health and Disease, found that lactic-fermented egg whites could  “significantly” lower visceral fat levels.

Looking at 37 participants, the research team used egg whites that were fermented with lactobacillus.

The subjects either followed the egg white protocol or consumed a drink containing whey.

After following this diet for 12 weeks, the egg group saw reductions in their belly fat.

While eggs have been previously considered bad news for cardiovascular health, Podboi explained that eating them in moderation is key.

She said: “Research shows that consuming up to two whole eggs daily is considered a safe amount without negatively affecting cardiovascular health.”

While eggs could help aid weight loss, the expert added that your overall diet is more important than single food.

She said: “Achieving weight loss often requires following a calorie deficit diet, whereby the energy intake is lower than the energy expended. The fundamental principles of mathematics come into play here.”
