The Biden administration last week announced plans to distribute booster shots of COVID-19 vaccines to ramp up protection against infection, beginning the week of September 20.
Those who received the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines would be eligible to get a booster shot 8 months after they received the second dose of those vaccines, officials said, pending authorization by the US Food and Drug Administration, which will conduct an independent review, and the recommendation of an advisory committee of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
At a World Health Organization (WHO) briefing, the WHO’s chief scientist, Soumya Swaminathan, MD, raised the ”moral and ethical argument of giving people third doses, when they’re already well protected and while the rest of the world is waiting for their primary immunization.” Swaminathan is a pediatrician from India who has been globally recognized for her research on tuberculosis and HIV.
