If you thought Nick Cannon’s family life couldn’t possibly get more chaotic, buckle up for this new jaw-dropping revelation.
Appearing on a June 2023 episode of Dr. Laura Berman’s The Language of Love podcast, the dad of 12 revealed that some of his kids don’t actually know each other. And even for the ones who have met, they’ve never been told that they’re siblings. Explaining that some of the 6 mothers of his children have expressly stated that they don’t want their kids to interact with the children he has with the other women, Cannon shared how complicated it’s becoming to avoid the topic as his kids are getting older.
Dr. Berman asked The Masked Singer host in statement form, “In your dream world, regardless of whether you’re romantically involved or not romantically involved with the mothers, all your children will know each other. All of your children will come together, go on trips together or outings together.”
“Yes. They’re all Cannons,” the entertainment multi-hyphenate replied. “They’ll probably go to the same schools and all that.” He dropped the bomb that his kids have never all been in the same place or met one another, explaining, “As much as that may be a wish of mine, I’ve got to respect that’s not a wish of everyone’s.”
We’re shocked, considering how often Cannon has attempted to normalize his unconventional family dynamic in the media. This major bombshell must stem from his desire to have all of his children interact, which we understand since it’s normal for half-siblings to grow up around one another in many blended families.
Explaining Why the Kids Are Kept Apart
The Drumline actor shared that he thinks the time will come when his kids will all meet, saying, “One of the things I’ve witnessed from some of my elders in the game, once the children get of age to make their own decisions, it’ll happen.”
Subtly sharing his unhappiness with the current dynamic, Cannon confirmed that he does want his children to know each other as brothers and sisters. “Because they’re currently under their mothers’ jurisdiction, I’m trying to play by the moms’ rules,” he explained.
“But once they can make their own decisions, I would hope and pray that we’ll have established a strong enough relationship that they’ll want to come hang out with me,” Cannon added. The unsaid words “and each other” linger in the air, though he didn’t say them.
His 6-Year-Old Is Catching On
Cannon stated, “I think right now is the time to start having, and this has been a family debate about when to have the full and honest discussion with the 6-year-old, because he’s a genius.” Golden Saigon, the youngest son he shares with Brittany Bell, tested at a 4th-grade level in school in January 2023, and his advanced intelligence has clued him into the fact that he has siblings beyond the two who live with him and his mother.
“I think he’s kind of already figured it out,” the concerned dad shared. “He knows he has other siblings. Even within his own house, he’s not an only child.” Cannon continued, “He knows about his older siblings. He’s been around the younger ones. He’s been around them, just nobody talks about it. It’s not like, ‘This is your brother or your sister.’” We’re absolutely reeling over this information.
How Technology Is Playing a Part in the Complex Situation
The Love Don’t Cost a Thing actor explained how technology has played a role in Golden Saigon figuring out the family tree as well. “I think the school that he’s in, he’s on the internet. He knows his dad is known for having a lot of kids,” Cannon said.
“The time is now before another kid at the school says [something], but I think it’s not going to be a difficult conversation,” the media mogul continued before touching on what he believes would be an “age-appropriate” way to navigate the talk.
Hypothetically speaking to his 6-year-old, Cannon said, “You know daddy already has a lot of kids. And you’re special, I appreciate our bond, but I also have other relationships that have produced other children that I love dearly as well.” He added that he would hand the conversational baton to Golden Saigon, or any of his kids, at that point to “ask him how he feels about it.”
He’s Already Had the Conversation With His Eldest Kids
Cannon also revealed that he’s already had the conversation with his eldest kids, 12-year-old twins Monroe and Moroccan, whom he shares with ex-wife Mariah Carey. He shared that while they expressed excitement about having more brothers and sisters, “It was also like, ‘Well what about me?’” Cannon explained that Monroe asked him if he loved her the most of all his kids, to which he responded, “You are my firstborn; you are unique.”
“You find something that you can have that’s just theirs,” he continued. “I think every child wants that. But I also believe there’s going to be some feelings they don’t even share with me right away [like] ‘I wish I would have had a different scenario or different upbringing.’ And when those things are brought up, we deal with them,” Cannon concluded.
Nick Cannon’s 12 Kids & 6 Co-Parenting Partners
In addition to his and Carey’s twins, and his son Golden Saigon with Bell, Cannon also shares son Rise Messiah, 9, and daughter Powerful Queen, 2, with Bell. He’s also dad to 2-year-old twin sons, Zion Mixolydian and Zillion Heir, as well as daughter Beautiful Zeppelin, 7 months, whose mother is Abby De La Rosa. Additionally, he shares 11-month-old son Legendary Love with Bre Tiesi, 9-month-old daughter Onyx Ice with LaNisha Cole, and late infant son Zen and 6-month-old daughter Halo Marie with Alyssa Scott.
Cannon has repeatedly tried to brush off and justify concerns about his parenting choices, but this feels like a major turning point in the narrative. He’s absolutely right about one thing, though: the older his kids get, the more complicated it’s going to be to keep their family ties hidden. They may not be too forgiving of the secret once they reach a certain age as well — a factor Cannon seems to be well aware of.
