Hair loss: Dr Ranj discusses causes of male pattern baldness

The professor in the department of dermatology, at the Yale School of Medicine, pointed out the “most obvious” sign of hair loss.

This is when there is a noticeable change in the hairline, with the classic M-shape forming.

Dr Perkins said: “For most people, this begins with hair thinning at the crown of the head and temples, and often starts with thinning hair rather than total hair loss.

“If you’re really concerned about hair loss, you can photograph your hairline or the top of your head every few months in the same lighting conditions to see if your hairline is receding.”

Not everybody, however, experiences hairline hair loss; some men experience diffuse thinning.

Dr Perkins explained that this type of hair loss results in baldness that starts from the back or top, rather than from the hairline.

“Just like a receding hairline, the easiest way to spot diffuse thinning is to compare photos from different time periods,” advised Dr Perkins.

The earlier you identify male pattern baldness, the better, as you can save your hair.

Dr Perkins said: “It’s much easier preventing hair from falling out than replacing it once it’s gone.”

People who seek treatment early will be able to take prescribed medication, such as finasteride or minoxidil.

Dr Perkins explained: “Finasteride works by reducing DHT levels throughout your body, which protects your hair from the damaging effects of DHT.

“Minoxidil works by improving blood flow to your scalp and moving your follicles into the anagen phase, or growth phase, of your hair growth cycle.”

Dr Perkins added: “Both of these medications are effective, and the earlier you start using them, the more hair you should be able to maintain.”

As for dietary measures, Dr Perkins encourages balding men to eat poultry and fish.

“In addition to protein, a variety of other nutrients, vitamins and minerals all play important roles in helping you maintain a good level of hair density,” said Dr Perkins.

Vitamins to include in your diet are:

  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Biotin.
