Jessica Alba, the actress turned entrepreneur, recently opened up to Shape about her wellness brand, The Honest Company, and got, well, very honest about her journey with postpartum hair loss.
“I struggled with hair loss after I had my kids,” she told Shape. “It’s something that no one told me and people don’t really speak about.”
Alba launched The Honest Company in 2011 as a solution to her own struggle of finding non-toxic and safe baby care products for her firstborn who had a reaction to a mainstream detergent brand. Her company would later expand to selling personal care products, makeup, cleaning supplies and other wellness goods. So, it’s no surprise that the brand recently expanded their supplement line to include more mom-friendly products. And one product that Alba is most excited about is the postnatal hair wellness product.
“Postpartum can be a vulnerable time,” she says, “especially for those struggling with hair health, so it was important for us to launch a solution for this.”
Postpartum hair loss or excessive hair shedding, is a completely normal and common condition. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that most women who have just given birth will experience some form of hair loss, and that it is caused by falling estrogen levels. They also note that it’s not true hair loss, and most women will see their hair fully grow back by their child’s first birthday, if not sooner.
In addition to using a supplement to kick start hair growth, dermatologists also recommend skipping heated hair tools and limiting the number of times you wash your hair each week. Try to forgo any chemical colors or treatments until your hair has had a chance to fully regrow. And make sure you’re getting enough protein in your diet, as this helps with cell turnover which promotes growth.
But the good news is that even if you haven’t given birth recently you can still soak in all the benefits of Alba’s new supplement.
“It seems that nearly everyone these days desires healthier hair and a healthier scalp. I am not currently postpartum and I use this,” Alba said. “It has made a huge difference.”
