If there’s one platform you can count on for delivering all manner of weird, outrageous and, on occasion, rather profound, hacks and tricks when it comes to food, surprisingly it’s not the halls of MasterChef, but TikTok. With most of the world having endured weeks of lockdown, it appears we turned our attention to things we could control: food. And so we took a discerning eye to our kitchen supplies and pantry staples and thought, “How can I make the most out of these rather basic ingredients?” The answers have now broken the Internet.
In the latest trend to emerge on TikTok, it appears we’re no longer content with the joys of al dente pasta. Instead, we want the pasta to become a crispy chip we can dip. It might sound like the kind of thing that would see Italians hoard their pasta supplies in defiance against such travesty, but when you think of it, doesn’t the pasta chip just combine two of life’s greatest inventions?
Thanks to TikTok user @feelgoodfoodie, everyone is now going crazy for pasta chips. And if the name sounds familiar, it should. This is the same user who saw everyone rush to their local grocery store for feta cheese and pasta, all to make that viral feta pasta recipe. Somehow, she’s managed to do it again.
In the video posted to her account, @feelgoodfoodie serves the pasta chips with a nice feta and greek yoghurt dip. But whatever your dip preference, it seems pasta chips will work with pretty much anything, from the sweet chilli and sour cream combinations to the classic ole tomato or BBQ sauce.
It didn’t take long for the craze to take off, and it seems people are well and truly getting onto the pasta chip bandwagon. Already, recipes for a salt and vinegar spin-off have entered the mix that even use a different kind of pasta shape, too. Our guess is it’s just a matter of time before pasta Doritos pops up on our feeds.
While we’re reluctant to mess with a good thing, we can’t help but also want to get in on the action, too. If you’re wanting to try the pasta chip, there are ways you can turn this naughty treat into something healthy – or at least, healthier. Options like low-carb pastas are great, and the same crunch will be achieved by the air-fryer.
Consider options like Banza Elbows made from chickpeas, or red lentil penne that you can buy from any local supermarket. Other pastas that use almond flour will also be free from gluten, grains, soy and dairy, making it a great option for something that is rich in healthy fats and satiating. Alternatively, you might even be able to spiralize some vegetables and see if that works.
