Last week, Emily Skye jumped on her Instagram to talk about body comparison and some of the unrealistic body image expectations out there – especially for women who have just given birth.
The post came off the back of images of Emily Ratajkowski shared to the internet, post-baby, looking incredibly toned – however receiving a mound of backlash for her ‘unrealistic portrayal’ of postpartum women.
“Recently a celebrity showed off her super flat belly 11 days after having her baby. I’ve seen so many people, especially mothers upset by it & compare their own bodies,” Emily Skye explained. “I am all for body positivity & celebrating ALL bodies as we’re all amazing in our own ways. Comparing & feeling inferior to people who seem “perfect” is unhealthy. We can’t control what other people choose to put out there but we can take control of how we allow them to affect us. How you feel about yourself is your responsibility, don’t give that power to other people. This is something I had to learn myself too!”
The post got us thinking about how easy it is for us women to compare ourselves others, especially in a world filled with photoshop, filters and curated feeds – a sentiment that Skye feels incredible passionate about.
So to get the #girlpower vibes flowing, we asked Em to share her thoughts – and give you something to keep up your sleeve the next time you’re not feeling the best about your body – just in time for the release of her new post pregnancy program.
In the video she discusses being bombarded by perfect imagery on Instagram – “there are apps that change your body and face in videos, which is mind-blowing to me” – and comparing ourselves – “I think it’s really important that we take responsibility for ourselves and what we think about ourselves, and realise a lot of things go into these people’s images.”
