Arthritis: Doctor gives advice on best foods to help ease pain

Characterised by inflammation, arthritis refers to a common condition that causes pain in your joints.

While certain symptoms can aggravate symptoms linked to the joint disease, others could reduce arthritis pain.

Fortunately, Dr Sunni Patel, from Dish Dash Deets, shared with Express.co.uk six anti-inflammatory foods that could help.

“While they may not provide a cure for arthritis, incorporating these foods into your diet can potentially help ease symptoms and improve overall joint health,” the doctor said.

1. Nuts and seeds

Packed with healthy fats and antioxidants, nuts and seeds can help reduce inflammation and positively impact arthritis symptoms, the doctor explained.

Dr Sunni recommended eating a small handful of almonds, walnuts, and flaxseeds each day.

2. Olive oil

The doctor explained extra virgin olive oil contains monounsaturated fats and antioxidants that can help improve joint health.

He said: “Use extra virgin olive oil as your primary cooking oil and for salad dressings. A couple of tablespoons per day is a common amount in Mediterranean diets.”

3. Whole grains

From rice to quinoa and oats to spelt, the fibre content in whole grains can contribute to anti-inflammatory effects.

The doctor recommended aiming for at least half of your daily grain intake to come from whole grains. 

4. Garlic

Rich in sulphur compounds, the popular cooking ingredient can help dampen down inflammation.

Dr Sunni said: “Include one to two cloves of garlic in your daily cooking to enjoy its potential anti-inflammatory benefits.

5. Green tea

Packed with antioxidants called catechins, the popular beverage offers more than an earthy, calming taste.

Regularly consuming green tea could help reduce arthritis-related inflammation, Dr Sunni explained.

“Drinking two to three cups of green tea daily can provide a good dose of its antioxidants,” he said.

6. Blackberries, blueberries, and cherries

Characterised by tart flavour, these fruits are rich in plant compounds, known as anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory effects.

These antioxidants can help reduce your levels of inflammation, according to the expert.

“Consuming a cup of cherries or tart cherry juice daily is a common recommendation for potential anti-inflammatory effects,” Dr Sunni added.
