Apple cider vinegar has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for numerous medical conditions. These days, it’s been transformed into a common health hack that has a number of benefits. But you should avoid taking too much apple cider vinegar, as it could have the opposite effect.

Apple cider vinegar has grown in popularity over recent years, owing to its numerous health claims.

The vinegar itself is made from fermented apple cider, and it has at least 30 different health benefits.

The fermentation process encourages the production of healthy bacteria and enzymes.

Regularly taking apple cider vinegar has been claimed to lower your cholesterol, and even protect against acid reflux.

While apple cider vinegar is generally safe for most people to take, you should avoid having too much, warned nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.

It could have some negative health effects if consumed in large quantities.

You might have severe tooth enamel erosion or even develop a potassium deficiency.

Some patients notice a burning pain at the back of their throat or on their skin.

“Be sure to always dilute apple cider vinegar in water instead of drinking it straight to prevent negative side effects,” he said.

“You should also start with a low dose and work your way up to assess your tolerance.

“While there are a wide range of apple cider vinegar uses, it shouldn’t be viewed as a quick fix or cure when it comes to your health.

“Instead, it should be paired with a nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle to really see results and the best apple cider vinegar benefits.”

Everyone reacts to apple cider vinegar differently, but you should still limit your intake.

Work up to a maximum of 30ml a day – which is the equivalent to about two tablespoons.

Drink the vinegar through a straw to limit its capacity to erode your tooth enamel.

After taking your daily shot of apple cider vinegar, rinse out your mouth with water immediately, and wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth.

But don’t let the side effects put you off – apple cider vinegar is a great addition to your daily diet.

It helps to regulate your blood sugar levels, and subsequently lowers your risk of diabetes.

You could also lower your cholesterol, reduce your blood pressure, and boost your gut health by taking the vinegar.

If you’re taking any blood sugar medication, you should speak to a doctor before taking apple cider vinegar, however.

You might need to change your dose of diabetes medication avoid developing low blood sugar.
